Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a group of inherited rare diseases that causes extremely fragile skin. So fragile that even with minor friction, the skin blisters, and tears. As a result, patients are often left with painful wounds that heal slowly. 1-3 These blisters and sores can appear anywhere on the body and can even develop inside the body in areas such as inside the mouth, throat, stomach, and intestines. 3
EB is commonly a result of a change in a gene that provides the instructions for creating proteins that normally help maintain the structure of the skin. 1-4 With EB, those changes lead to those proteins being made incorrectly and depending on the extent of the alteration, causes symptoms to range from mild to severe. 1
There are 4 major types of epidermolysis bullosa based on the layer of the skin where blisters form. 1,2
- Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS)
- Junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB)
- Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB)
- Kindler syndrome
